President Draupadi Murmu met 160 underprivileged children from different slums taking part in the 12-day Gandhi Summer School organized by Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti (GSDS) in Rashtrapati Bhawan today. The delegation of the children was led by GSDS Vice Chairman and former Union Minister Vijay Goel. President Murmu warmly interacted with the children, listening attentively to the activities they have learnt during these 12-days. The President also expressed her admiration towards children for their resilience and determination and also encouraged them to pursue their talent ardently. Speaking about the Gandhi Summer School, Vijay Goel said, “The 12-day summer camp is an initiative aimed at empowering slum children through a diverse range of skill-based activities. Goel said that the Gandhi Summer School, known for its commitment to provide holistic development to children by providing them different skill sets, has opened its doors to children from the nearby slum areas, offering them an opportunity to learn, grow, and dream”. Goel said, “Through this initiative, we aim to empower the children by fostering their innate artistic abilities, promoting skill-building and instilling confidence”.Goel also informed that the children of drivers, daily wage labourers, rickshaw pullers, local vendors, fruit sellers, painters, security guards, tailors, farmers and welders are among those attending this camp. Three buses daily bring these children from their respective areas at 9 am to Gandhi Darshan and then drop them back at 5 pm. Goel said that expert trainers who are conducting various sessions where the children learn mime, dance, music, wall painting, poster making, theatre, charkha spinning, videography, painting, bamboo craft and paper, peace-building exercises also met President Murmu.
